Eid al-Fitr: a guide to the festival, which marks the end of Ramadan

After an entire month of sacrifice and fasting, Muslims prepare themselves for one of the most emblematic celebrations of their culture: Eid al-Fitr. This festival (which this year kicks off today) of breaking the fast, puts an end to Ramadan. It is believed that God rewards all those who fasted and it is also the first day of the new Islamic month of Shawwal.

During this day, Muslim greet to each other on the streets: Eid Mubarak (Happy Eid) after starting the day with a small sweet breakfast; something really enjoyable after 30 days of fasting. Then, they will give charity to the poor and will get together for the Eid prayers. During these special days, people usually dress neatly and offer gifts to their beloved, it is also a period to visit family and friends.

10 tips to keep fit during Ramadan

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar during the one Muslims fast from dawn to sunset. This period is used to cleanse body and soul and commemorate the revelation of the Quran as one of the 5 pillars of Islam. As it usually coincides with the hot and long Summer days, to ensure adequate nutrition and health you should consider the follow:

- Before Ramadan starts, visit your family doctor and ask advice about recommendations you should follow regarding your individual condition. Not everyone is prepared to follow a rigorous fasting.

- Plan you fast-breaking menus to ensure a balance diet and that you are getting the necessary nutrients. Eat food rich in carbohydrates, proteins, fruits and vegetables and don´t forget to drink plenty of water.

- Avoid eating anxiously and in huge quantities when the fast is over. You can start with something light like dried fruits and juices or water and eat heavier meals progressively.
