Since the onset of the Syrian civil war in 2011, the United Nations has identified estimated more than 13 million Syrians that are in need of humanitarian assistance. More than 6 million have been displaced within Syria and almost 5 million are now refugees outside the country. Turkey is the largest host country with over 2.7 million Syrian refugees and others, like Lebanon, Jordan and most of the countries of The European Union have also welcomed Syrians fleeing from the war.

Nowadays Britain is showing a strong commitment to helping developing countries, and the ultimate data places the UK as one of the leading countries contributing to foreign aid.
In this sense, the last year UK´s donation was the second largest in the world in terms of volume with approximately £12.2bn, only overtaken by the £20.3bn given by the USA. But related to population Britain seems to be much more generous, as the average UK citizens paid £188, three times more than what the US citizens spent (with an average of £61).
It is also noteworthy that the UK´s contribution has been rising in the past five-year period, even despite the international economic crisis. And if in 2010 the UK contributed with 10% of the total international aid, this percentage has risen to 14% in 2015, which means that Britain provided £1 out of £7.
