How to be a smart OFW investor back in The Philippines

This idea might seem quite pessimistic to Filipino expats due to the corruption of their system, the annoying red tape and the existence of monopolies in certain economic sectors but still it is a very attractive market for investors due to its strategic location as a gateway to the Asian market and the tax-holidays for some investments.

Whether it is an investment in Real State, in stocks, bonds, mutual funds or even starting your own business the main objective of your investment is to increase your income besides your regular job overseas. For Filipinos it is a great decision to invest in their country both for their family and to the community back home.

Perhaps, you should consider social businesses as one of the smartest and most rewarding sectors to invest in, as there are many social problems in The Philippines yet to be solved that at the same time represent a potential niche for growth.

Here are some investment options:

1. Invest in the Philippine Stock Exchange in a responsible company with a steady growth and a healthy cash balance. The PSE and the Securities and Exchange Commission, have already established safeguards to protect your rights as an investor such as the Securities Investors Protection Fund, Risk Based Capital Adequacy, the Market Integrity Board, and few others.

2. As an alternative to Real State you can also buy some tourism resort and rent it out through the help of a trustful person back in the country.

3. Livelihood projects for the community are one of the best options. You can take advantage of the Livelihood Development Programme for OFWs, which provides entrepreneurial services in the trading, manufacturing and agri-businesses sectors plus a loan up to 200.000 PHP per individual or 1 million PHP for a group of 5. The OFWs reintegration programme offers 300.000 PHP to returning OFWs.

Don´t forget to educate yourself both in the Philippine market and in entrepreneurship and elaborate a business plan. Once your investment is running make a list of tangible benefits, including your contribution to the reduction of poverty and the fostering of employment and economic growth and last but not least; never give up!
